Who were the victims of the New Orleans attack?

 


A well-known American college football player, a young aspiring nurse, and a mother of a four-year-old are among the victims of the New Year's Day attack in New Orleans, which left at least 15 people dead. Their identities are being shared by their families and loved ones before the authorities have completed post-mortem examinations. Here’s what we know so far.

Martin 'Tiger' Bech
Martin "Tiger" Bech was a former football player at Princeton University. His death was confirmed by the university in a statement. "There was no more appropriate nickname for a Princeton player I coached," said Princeton football coach Bob Surace. "He was a 'Tiger' in every way – a fierce competitor with boundless energy, a beloved teammate, and a caring friend."

Bech's brother, Jack Bech, shared a tribute on social media, alongside a news article reporting Martin’s death. "Love you always, brother!" Jack wrote. "You inspired me every day, and now you get to be with me in every moment. I got this family T, don’t worry. This is for us." Martin was part of the Ivy League Championship teams in 2016 and 2018.

Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux
Nikyra Dedeaux, 18, was an aspiring nurse. Her mother, Melissa Dedeaux, confirmed her death on social media. "I lost my baby, just pray for me and my family pleaseeeeee!!! God, I need you now!!" the grieving mother posted, along with a picture of Nikyra wearing a red graduation cap and gown from this year. Melissa Dedeaux, who is also a nurse, told local media outlet Nola that her daughter had been set to begin nursing training later this month. Nikyra had snuck out with a cousin and a friend, both of whom survived.

Reggie Hunter
Reggie Hunter, a store manager and father of two, was confirmed dead by his cousin Shirell Robinson Jackson in a statement to CBS News. Jackson described him as "full of life" and shared that the 37-year-old had messaged the family just minutes after midnight on New Year's Eve to wish them a Happy New Year. He was with another cousin who was injured in the attack.

Nicole Perez
Nicole Perez, 27, worked at a deli store and was described by her friend and boss, Kimberly Usher Fall, as a "dedicated, smart, and good-hearted person," according to CBS News. Perez was also a mother to a four-year-old son.

Matthew Tenedorio
Matthew Tenedorio, a 25-year-old audio-visual technician, had a "laid-back spirit and infectious laughter" that brought joy to those around him, according to a fundraiser set up by his family in his name. His mother, Cathy Tenedorio, told NBC News that she last saw her son alive at 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve, recalling that she had hugged and kissed him before parting ways.
